Sláinte Paragon Review – Orchard’s Applewood Charcoal Grill & Bar

Sláinte (pronounced “slawn-cha”) at Paragon Shopping Centre is where café comfort meets evening elegance. A whiskey bar, cocktail lounge, and applewood charcoal grill all in one, it’s one of the most talked-about restaurants in Orchard. I had the chance to join a tasting session and here’s my verdict — what stood out, what could be better, and whether it’s worth a visit for a date night.

What to Expect at Sláinte Paragon

Location & Vibe

You’ll find Sláinte at #04-09, Paragon, 290 Orchard Road; by day it feels cosy and relaxed (think café style: natural light, comfortable seating), and as evening falls, it transforms into a warm, classy spot with ambient lighting, a whiskey bar, applewood charcoal-grill aromas, and an intimate mood. Great for couples, date nights, or those who want something a bit more upscale but not stiff.

Menu & Signature Features

They serve breakfast / brunch items (bagels, toasts, salads) in the daytime, and shift to more elaborate offerings in the evening — signature cocktails, mains, and applewood charcoal-grilled meats that showcase beautiful smoky flavours. Expect pastas, interactive desserts, and an impressive selection of complimentary and auction-sourced whiskies as highlights.

Pricing

Most dishes (mains and larger plates) hover between S$25 to S$65++; desserts are around S$16–20++ depending on the item. For a restaurant located in Paragon, where every store is super branded, the pricing at Sláinte is affordable.

Service & Ambience

Staff are attentive, friendly, and genuinely interested in knowing how you like each dish. The place manages to be elegant yet welcoming (not overly formal). I appreciated the balance.

What We Tried & My Thoughts

Here’s what my husband and I sampled during the tasting session, along with my impressions.

Cocktail “Sláinte Special” ($25.50)

Bold, well-balanced, a signature drink. It felt like a statement cocktail — complex, mature, sets the tone.

Tropical Mojito (mine) ($18)

Light, refreshing, pleasantly sweet with tropical notes. A great palate opener before heavier dishes.

Pesto Crusted Bone Marrow ($23)

Decadent and rich; the pesto crust gave an herbal lift to the buttery bone marrow. A luxurious starter. I usually dont eat bone marrow as its chewy and springy but it was surprisingly very soft and melted in my mouth.

Wandered Flat Iron Steak ($36)

Excellent sear and flavour depth from the applewood charcoal grill. Juicy and flavourful — satisfying even as a tasting portion.

Ayam Bakar ($24)

One of the standouts. Smoky char, juicy chicken; the marinade/spice profile was well done. Excellent value for flavour.

Ember Roasted Marshmallow ($20)

Fun dessert. Interactive, playful, nostalgic. The roasting adds theatre and the sweetness was perfectly balanced. My husband had fun roasting the marshmallow!

The Highlights & Minor Drawbacks

What I Loved

  1. Ambience & Setting: Warm lighting, comfortable but stylish design, good for lingering over drinks or food.
  2. Drinks & Cocktails: Signature drinks hold up. The tropical mojito was a refreshing contrast to richer dishes.
  3. Applewood Charcoal-Grilled Flavours: The use of an applewood charcoal grill gives the meats a smoky, distinctive flavour that stands out from typical charcoal-grilled dishes.
  4. Dessert Experience: Ember roasted marshmallow is memorable — adds an element of fun and escape.
  5. Service: The staff really took care, checked in, made us feel seen. That elevates the meal.

What Could Be Better / What to Know

  • Portions are tasting-style for events; for regular dinner, you may want to order more, especially if you’re hungry.
  • Some mains may seem pricey if you compare by portion size, though in terms of flavour and ambiance, it is worth it.

While I was invited for this tasting, Sláinte currently hassome promotions!
